Breaking Chains - Sheffield Civil Rights

Sheffield's Past Campaigners

Many people who were from or lived in the Sheffield area, have bravely stood up for causes that they believed in.

During the 18th and 19th Century people like James Montgomery, Mary Ann Rawson and Samuel Holberry took a stance against things they witnessed going on that they didn't agree with.

Things that they campaigned against included the slave trade, the denial of the workers' right to vote, and child labour.

Worksheets on this subject are available on this page and include a timeline illustrating some of the events that took place in Sheffield with brief descriptions of the individuals mentioned above. Exercise questions relating to this are also available. Answers are provided on a separate sheet.
