Armand Point and Islamic Architecture

Art in Bradford´s Collections

The following works make interesting comparisons to Armand Point's An Arab Weaver and could be the basis for discussion, sketchbook work and practical work.

Dollhouse 2002 by Yinka Shonibare (born 1962)
(see Related Links at the bottom of the page)

The art collector Peter Norton asked a number of major artists, such as Yinka Shonibare, to produce miniature works of art that he and his family could send to friends instead of Christmas cards. Shonibare made a toy Victorian townhouse, decorated in his own unique style. Shonibare is known for his Turner prize-nominated installation on Fragonard, the French painter. On the wall is a picture of Fragonard, next to a photograph of Shonibare, and the batik fabrics he often uses in his work. The wry little blue plaque on the outside of the house shows that Shonibare has finally made it within the UK’s art establishment – the Artist lived here.

The Wanderer is another work of art by Yinka Shonibare featured in My Learning.

Cartwright Hall, 1995 by  Lubna Chowdhary

(pictured above)

Lubna Chowdhary made a series of nine models of Bradford's architectural landmarks in ceramic. The emphasis is on architectural details and patterning rather than scale and accuracy.

You will find these questions on a label beside An Arab Weaver in the Gallery. They ask you to:

  • Look at the horseshoe-shaped arch in this painting. These can be found all over the Muslim world

  • Imagine Algeria, where this picture was painted. It is hot and dry. This house is the best place to be – the walls are thick and cool, there aren’t many windows, and the deep courtyard keeps parts of the house in shade, however hot the sun gets. It looks like the artist has picked the shadiest part of the house in which to sit.
