How to use My Learning

My Learning is a resource for teachers and learners inspired by museum, library and archive collections in Yorkshire and the North West. Resources are presented as Learning Journeys. Learning Journeys are suggested sequences to learn about a particular curriculum topic. You can search for learning journeys by subject, age group, museum or specific words. Learning journeys are continually being added so please check regularly for new subjects and learning journeys.

Subjects
cover curriculum subjects including those such as Citizenship and Enterprise that are currently often taught with another subject. For a full list of subjects covered by learning journeys go to the subject box in the top navigation bar.
Age group is categorised by different Key Stages, Lifelong Learning and Early Years. For a full list of groups go to the age group box in the top navigation bar.
Themes can be searched for from the search box at the top right of the home page.
Word searching through the search box at the top right of the home page will highlight if a learning journey has that word/s in any of the text. You can also search for museums from here.

Museums can be searched by:
  • Museums from the top navigation bar. The term museum covers museum, galleries, libraries and archives. This search will bring up in alphabetical order all the museums in Yorkshire and the North West that have learning journeys on My Learning. The information that is supplied about a museum will give information such as address, opening times and contact details, education programmes if applicable and more information about the museum specialism. This page will also have a link to learning journeys created by that museum. You can also search here for specific words and if a learning journey has that word in its title it will be highlighted, or if it is in the main body of text it will identify learning journeys with that word in.
  • Map of Learning Journeys on the left column of the home page. You can drag to zoom in or out to change the range of the map.
  • Word searching for museums from the search box at the top right of the home page will highlight museum names.

Background to My Learning

The My Learning website is Renaissance Yorkshire Hub initiative, set up and developed by Vicky Mitchell, Hub e-Learning Manager.

In 2003 research carried out by MLA Yorkshire with schools all over Yorkshire showed that one of the factors that would encourage more schools to visit museums was for teachers to be able to access online resources. Teachers indicated that they wanted flexible resources that could be used as stand alone teaching aids or as a planning tool to prepare for a visit. They also suggested that they wanted a ‘One stop shop’ for Yorkshire recognising the benefits of using local and regional museums regularly as well as the occasional ‘big long distance visit to a national’.

This research coincided with the Renaissance Yorkshire Hub deciding that e-learning should be central to the learning element of its plans. The Renaissance Yorkshire Hub consists of the five museum services of Bradford, Hull, Leeds, Sheffield and York.

The website, launched in 2006 was conceived as a pre and post visit resource for teachers offering an integrated approach to learning with museums. My Learning is currently expanding and will include resources from the North West, from museums as far afield as Carlisle in Cumbria to Manchester.
