A Victorian Farm in Action

Farming and Domestic Equipment: Now and Then

This classroom activity compares a range of farming and domestic implements to their modern-day equivalents.

Learning Objectives

  • To identify differences and similarities between the past and present
  • To identify and understand some typical Victorian artefacts

Show pupils a range of different artefacts from Church Farm in this Powerpoint image gallery and discuss the following points:

  • What is it made out of?
  • What do you think it was used for?
  • Does it look like something we use today?
  • How is it the same?
  • How is it different?
  • What can the object tell us about what life was like in the Victorian times?

Pupils can then try the interactive drag and drop powerpoint activity, matching Victorian and modern artefacts to task and actions.

Can pupils find out about any more Victorian artefacts and identify modern equivalents? They could carry out research using this website or others.
