A Passion for Fashion - Madame Clapham Revisited

The Case Study: Madame Clapham Revisited

In 2008 Hull School of Art and Design produced a cross-course project focusing on ‘A Passion for Fashion – Madame Clapham Revisited’.

In partnership with Hull School of Art and Design, Hull Museum Education commissioned a live project from the students. This opportunity gave client-oriented parameters, which reflected appropriate professional working methods, and specific client-led requirements.

A series of handling replicas of original costume were produced by the students from the Foundation Degree in Fashion and Interpretation, and the BA Applied Creative Design (Fashion and Costume).

The BA Film and Television students produced two films - the documentation of the construction of the replicas, and, the design and creation of contemporary garments by third-year BA Fashion students in response to the Madame Clapham collection. Further exploration covered the area of Sound Design, to produce stand-alone audio sequences to accompany the exhibits within the Madame Clapham exhibition.

The BTEC ND Graphic Design / Art and Design course entered the competition to design an exhibition poster and invitation (Sponsored by Trident (UK) - link below).

To celebrate the talent and achievements of the students, Ferens Art Gallery kindly offered an opening in their schedule to exhibit the outcomes of this live project. An exhibition steering group was set up to include student placements. The work emphasis was placed on project management, team skills, and the development of the exhibition narrative and content.

The students worked alongside the Keeper of the Hands on History museum, the Exhibitions Officer from the Ferens Art Gallery and the Education Officer. The students responded to the demands of the deadlines and constraints in developing a real exhibition.
