A History of Animation

Phenakistoscope

The Phenakistoscope is also known as the spindle viewer. Invented by Joseph Plateau and his sons. In the same year it was also invented independently by Simon Von Stampfer of Vienna.

The animation wheel is made of two discs that are connected together with a handle which the viewer holds.
